Aims:

The evaluation we are conducting, aims to monitor the delivery of the service, document the process of the delivery to identify any problems, and report patient and professional views of the perceived benefit of the service. The evaluation report will make recommendations about the possible continuation of the service and any potential for incorporation into rehabilitation practice.

Design:

This project has been implemented and is evaluating an innovative service for stroke patients on Mark Ward (Stroke Unit) at St Thomas' Hospital. This is a live reading service to be provided by Interact, the registered charity which developed it. Interact trained professional actors to read to stroke patients on a one-to-one basis. A reader spends approximately half an hour with each patient, inviting the patient to choose from a selection of material, reading to the patient and encouraging him/her to discuss the material read.
