|
| Background: |
| There
are unexplained inequalities in stroke mortality and other outcomes. |
|
| Setting:
|
| The
study will be based in south London, an area of marked social inequalities
and with a high proportion of residents from minority ethnic groups. |
|
| Aims: |
| To
improve on-going stroke care by developing a population beacon to
monitor stroke inequalities in a multi-ethnic urban population, and
to explain these inequalities from the perspective of patients, professionals
and statutory organisations (NHS, local authorities). |
|
| Design:
|
| We
will use South London Stroke Register retrospective data to investigate
relationships between inequalities, health outcomes and service use.
We will also conduct in-depth interviews with stroke patients, professionals
and NHS and local authority managers to investigate factors which
promote and hinder health after stroke, including access to/uptake
of stroke services. Using these analyses we will identify possible
strategies to address inequalities after stroke. Findings will be
applicable to the delivery of stroke care in other urban areas and
to other chronic disorders which particularly affect older people. |
