Background:
With the emphasis on shorter stays in hospital,
there is an increasing focus on caring for stroke patients in the
community. However, previous research has shown that if services are
inadequate, patients may feel abandoned, while carers may experience anxiety
and depression.

The Stroke Association set up the Stroke Family
Support Service to cover gaps in community support, especially when formal
support ceases. Family Support Organisers (FSOs) are employed to visit families
affected by stroke, giving them information and emotional support and
helping them adjust to the changes caused by stroke.
