Background:

Deep vein thrombosis DVT) is an important complication after stroke and causes significant morbidity and mortality. However, the true incidence of DVT after stroke in the modern era is uncertain as the process is often silent, with no obvious signs or symptoms.

Aims:

·  trying to establish the true incidence of DVT using a novel scanning technique called magnetic resonance direct thrombus imaging. This technique is non-invasive and highly accurate.

·  investigating whether it might be possible to identify patients with major silent DVTs, using a blood test known as the D-dimer test, who might benefit from treatment.
