Overall Aims:

• to establish the aetiology and epidemiology of the subtypes of stroke in different ethnic groups.

• to explore the lay epidemiology of prevention of stroke and of the illness.

• to understand the relationship between impairment, activity, participation and to develop appropriate methods to measure them.

• to develop and conduct randomised controlled trials in the fields of prevention, acute management and rehabilitation of stroke.

• to investigate ways of implementing findings and influencing policy.
